UPDATE: Garfield High School has just secured a dramatic 37-30 victory over Roosevelt in the highly anticipated 90th East L.A. Classic, captivating a record crowd of 14,000 fans at East Los Angeles College last night. This turnout marks the highest attendance for a high school football game in California this season, showcasing the fierce loyalty of alumni and fans alike.
In a thrilling match, Garfield’s newly appointed head coach, Patrick Vargas, who is in his first season after serving as an assistant, led the Bulldogs to victory. “When you step on the field, you hear that roaring crowd. You hear that booing crowd. That’s the time of your life,” Vargas expressed earlier this week, capturing the electric atmosphere of the game.
The Bulldogs (7-2, 6-0) faced challenges when star running back Ceasar Reyes, who set a school record with 420 yards last week, was sidelined with an injury in the first quarter. Backup running back Zastice Jauregui stepped up impressively, scoring two touchdowns, including a pivotal 15-yard run in the third quarter that extended Garfield’s lead to 34-8. Additionally, defensive lineman Chuck Perez contributed a three-yard touchdown run and recovered a crucial fumble.
Roosevelt (4-5, 3-2) initially surged ahead with an 8-6 lead in the first quarter, thanks to a four-yard touchdown run from Jordan Nunez and a successful two-point conversion by Abraham Cardenas. The Rough Riders fought back fiercely, scoring two touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the final moments of the game, closing the gap to just 37-30 during a thrilling 16-point fourth quarter.
With the regular season drawing to a close, Garfield faces another challenge this Thursday night against Northern League champion Eagle Rock. This upcoming game will be critical in determining their playoff prospects in the City Section Open Division.
The excitement of last night’s game is sure to resonate in the hearts of players and fans, as Garfield’s remarkable victory adds another chapter to the storied rivalry between these two schools. Stay tuned for more updates as the Bulldogs prepare for their decisive matchup ahead.
