Donnie Wahlberg’s ‘Boston Blue’ Expands to Over 100 Markets
Detectives Danny Regan and Lena Silver are set to capture audiences worldwide as the spin-off series Boston Blue has successfully secured distribution in over 100 international markets. The series made its world premiere at the MIPCOM market in Cannes last week, marking a significant milestone for the show and its creators.
In Boston Blue, Donnie Wahlberg reprises his role as Danny Regan, who relocates from New York City to Boston, where he partners with Sonequa Martin-Green, taking on the role of Lena Silver. The series debuted on CBS in the United States on October 17, 2023, and episodes are available for streaming on Paramount+ the day after airing on linear television.
Wide International Reach
The series has attracted a diverse roster of international buyers. Notably, it has been acquired by AXN Asia and Coupang Play in South Korea. In Africa, M-Net has secured the rights, while Sky will distribute the show in New Zealand. In European markets, Boston Blue has found a home with pay-TV giant Sky in German-speaking regions, as well as Play Media in Belgium, Cosmote TV in Greece, and Síminn in Iceland. The show will also be available on beIN in Cyprus and Turkey, along with CTV in Australia.
The procedural format of Boston Blue appeals to a broad audience, which has contributed to its rapid international success. The series quickly reaching over 100 territories has exceeded initial expectations, especially given the strong global fanbase established by its predecessor, Blue Bloods. Paramount Global Content Distribution is responsible for the international deals, which are crucial for the show’s funding and profitability.
Future Prospects and Potential Franchise
At the MIPCOM event, Wahlberg expressed optimism about the potential for a Blue Bloods–Boston Blue franchise, a strategy that CBS has successfully implemented with other procedural dramas like NCIS. With the growing interest in procedural formats, international sales will play a vital role in the show’s sustained success and expansion.
The distribution team, led by Lisa Kramer at Paramount Global Content Distribution, is working diligently to finalize additional international agreements for Boston Blue. This proactive approach indicates that more territories could soon join the growing list of markets where the show will be available.
As the series continues to receive positive attention, it positions itself well within the competitive landscape of international television, further solidifying its place in the genre.
