Urgent Call to Action: Help Colorado’s 3,448 Foster Youth Now
UPDATE: An urgent appeal has been made for the 3,448 children currently in foster care in Colorado. These vulnerable youths are navigating a system that has often defined them by their past traumas, rather than their potential. This holiday season, it’s crucial for the community to step up and support these children in need.
The staggering number reflects a growing crisis where children, often victims of abuse, neglect, or the aftermath of family issues, are left without stable homes. Many have faced overwhelming uncertainty and are in desperate need of caring adults who can provide love and support. According to Laura Rivera, a youth connections advocate with Raise the Future, the need for permanent, supportive relationships is more pressing than ever.
“Every child deserves to be known not by their past, but by the bright futures they dream of,” Rivera stated. She emphasizes that these children are not defined by their circumstances but are full of potential waiting to be nurtured.
As the holiday season approaches, now is the time for individuals and families to consider how they can make a difference. There are various ways to help, including volunteering with local organizations, advocating for supportive policies, or even becoming a foster or adoptive parent. Rivera notes that the stereotypes surrounding foster youth are not only inaccurate but also harmful. “These children are not bad; they are not unlovable,” she explains.
This call to action is not just about immediate assistance but also long-term commitment. Foster care is intended as a temporary solution, but real healing occurs through lasting connections. One young woman, previously hesitant to apply for college, gained confidence after receiving encouragement from a mentor. She is now thriving in her studies, proving that positive support can change a young person’s trajectory.
Rivera’s organization, Raise the Future, works tirelessly to connect these children with caring adults who can play a pivotal role in their lives. “It takes a community,” she says. Mentors, employers, and neighbors can all contribute to creating a supportive environment for these youths.
As we enter the holidays, let’s ensure that every child in Colorado feels a sense of belonging and support. The simple act of showing up can provide the encouragement these children desperately need.
