Trump Imposes Sanctions on Russia’s Major Oil Firms Amid Conflict

The announcement came after months of speculation and delays regarding potential sanctions. When asked why the administration chose to act now, Trump remarked, “I just felt it was time. We’ve waited a long time.” He expressed hope that these sanctions would lead to a resolution of the conflict, adding, “We hope that the war will be settled.”

Bessent also indicated that the United States is prepared to impose further sanctions if necessary to support Trump’s goals. He noted that the sanctions are intended to persuade allies to join in the collective effort against Russia. The Treasury Secretary’s comments followed his earlier predictions of an imminent increase in sanctions, which had been hinted at during a press briefing.

NATO’s Rutte supported the new sanctions, highlighting their purpose in altering Putin’s calculations regarding the ongoing war. Rutte stated, “It’s all about changing the calculus, making sure that Putin understands that the president’s vision this weekend of having a ceasefire… has to be step one now.”

In related developments, a planned summit between Trump and Putin, expected to take place in Hungary, has been canceled. Bessent clarified that scheduling issues were the reason for the cancellation, while Trump mentioned that the summit could still occur in the future under different circumstances.
