UDOT Completes US-191 Realignment, Enhancing Safety Now
UPDATE: The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has just completed the crucial US-191 Realignment Project, enhancing safety for travelers heading to Flaming Gorge. This significant improvement, announced earlier today, replaces a notorious 2.6-mile stretch of treacherous switchbacks with a safer, straighter alignment.
This project, made possible through an innovative public-private partnership with Simplot Phosphates, is a game changer, saving taxpayers approximately $40 million. The new road design includes essential features such as a northbound climbing lane, a southbound passing lane, and a new runaway truck ramp, all aimed at preventing accidents and improving recovery zones for vehicles that may veer off the road.
Rob Clayton, UDOT’s region 3 director, emphasized the urgency of these improvements, stating, “This new alignment is just going to be a much better situation for everybody that uses this road.” The steep switchbacks had long posed a risk to motorists, particularly for out-of-state travelers and truckers, making these enhancements vital.
The partnership with Simplot was instrumental in moving millions of cubic yards of earth, facilitating a quicker and more cost-effective completion of the project. Clayton described this collaboration as one of the first of its kind in Utah, labeling it a “win-win solution for everyone involved.”
Senator Ron Winterton echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significant positive impact on public safety. “The traveling public will really like that,” he stated, acknowledging the dangers previously faced by drivers navigating this steep terrain. Without this partnership and federal funding, Winterton warned that such improvements might not have been possible for another 50 years.
This transformative project is expected to greatly reduce accidents and improve traffic flow for the thousands of travelers who use US-191 each year. As this area continues to attract tourists and truck traffic, the realignment not only enhances safety but also supports the local economy.
For those traveling in the region, this is a critical update that promises a safer and more efficient journey. Stay tuned for further developments as UDOT continues to enhance infrastructure across Utah.
