Canucks Launch Diwali-Themed Jersey Featuring Local Artist’s Design

The Vancouver Canucks have unveiled a new Diwali-themed jersey, allowing fans to celebrate the festival of lights while showcasing their team spirit. Designed by Surrey-based artist Suki Kaur, the jersey incorporates vibrant elements such as a flame, a peacock, the night sky, and traditional phulkari patterns. This marks the fifth consecutive year the team has released merchandise to honor Diwali.
Kaur expressed her intention behind the design, stating, “The phulkari is special to me, because it’s such an integral part of Punjabi fashion, but I didn’t want it to speak just to Punjabis, because Diwali is not just about Punjabi people. You see variations in every culture.” Her inclusive approach aims to resonate with a broader audience, highlighting the diverse celebrations associated with Diwali.
The Canucks are set to host two Diwali nights, with events scheduled for November 1, 2023, in Abbotsford and November 5, 2023, at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. Fans can look forward to a festive atmosphere during these games, and many are excited to wear the new merchandise.
While the custom jersey is priced at $750, fans have expressed mixed reactions regarding the cost. Arjan Attwal, a Canucks fan, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m going to the Diwali game, so it’s gonna be cool to see it in person.” However, another fan, Austin Taylor, noted the steep price, mentioning, “A jersey of that price better come with front row seats and a dinner if you’re gonna pay that much.”
In addition to the jerseys, the team has made more affordable options available, including hats, hoodies, and pucks featuring the new logo. Fans have shown a keen interest in these items, indicating a desire for further Diwali-themed merchandise in the future.
The Canucks’ initiative not only highlights the significance of Diwali but also emphasizes the importance of cultural representation in sports. As the team continues to engage with its diverse fan base, events like Diwali night serve as a celebration of community and inclusivity.
