Astronomers Discover Massive Twin Cosmic Rings Dwarfed by Galaxies
Astronomers have made a remarkable discovery billions of light years away: a vast double-ring structure known as an Odd Radio Circle (ORC). This newly identified ORC, named RAD J131346.9+500320, spans hundreds of thousands of light years and emits a striking glow in radio wavelengths. Its origins, however, remain a mystery, even to the researchers who documented the findings in a recent study published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
The discovery of this ORC is notable as it represents only the second instance of a double-ring structure being identified. ORCs are unique cosmic entities composed of magnetized plasma and can only be detected through radio light. They often encircle galaxies, with diameters that can reach dozens of times larger than the entire Milky Way. Despite their impressive scale, the processes leading to their formation are still not fully understood, which captures the attention of astronomers who speculate that these structures may be remnants of ancient cosmic events.
According to the study’s lead author, Ananda Hota, an assistant professor at the University of Mumbai, “ORCs are among the most bizarre and beautiful cosmic structures we’ve ever seen — and they may hold vital clues about how galaxies and black holes co-evolve.” This discovery could provide important insights into the relationship between galaxies and the supermassive black holes that lie at their centers.
The newly found ORC resides approximately 7.5 billion light years from Earth within a densely populated region known as a galaxy cluster. This area consists of multiple galaxies that are gravitationally bound to one another, suggesting that the formation of ORCs may be influenced by interactions with surrounding plasma and the energetic jets produced by supermassive black holes. Hota explained that the jets from these black holes likely create the magnetized plasma clouds, which can be re-energized by significant explosions near the galactic center, causing them to emit radio waves.
Co-author Pratik Dabhade, an assistant professor at the National Centre for Nuclear Research in Warsaw, Poland, stated, “These discoveries show that ORCs and radio rings are not isolated curiosities — they are part of a broader family of exotic plasma structures shaped by black hole jets, winds, and their environments.” The findings emphasize how ORCs form part of a larger “low-surface brightness universe,” a realm of cosmic objects that have remained hidden from view until the advent of advanced radio telescopes.
The research highlights other intriguing phenomena observable in this hidden universe, including a remarkably spherical supernova remnant and intense stellar objects known as Wolf-Rayet stars, which burn brightly for only a brief period in cosmic terms.
As astronomers continue to study these fascinating structures, each discovery adds to the tapestry of our understanding of the cosmos. The ongoing investigation into ORCs like RAD J131346.9+500320 promises to unveil more about the complex interactions that shape galaxies and their supermassive black holes, pushing the boundaries of our knowledge about the universe.
