David E. Brest: Celebrated Biologist and Family Man Passes Away

David E. Brest, a respected biologist and devoted family man, has passed away peacefully at the age of 85. Surrounded by his beloved wife, Patricia, he left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a profound appreciation for the natural world. Born the youngest of three boys in San Gabriel, Southern California, he developed a passion for the outdoors during family camping trips, particularly with his twin brother, Dennis.

Brest’s academic journey began at the University of Oregon, where he studied Forestry. He later earned a PhD in Biology from UCLA, leading to a lengthy career in education. For 35 years, he taught in the Biology Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, retiring in 2003. His engaging lectures, particularly on photosynthesis, became a staple of family gatherings, often delivered with humor during both serious and light-hearted moments.

A Life of Love and Commitment

David met Patricia at CSUDH, where his intellect and supportive nature quickly charmed her. The couple married in June 1987, forming a partnership that was marked by mutual respect and affection. David was known for his unwavering loyalty to family, whether human or animal. His calm demeanor and problem-solving skills made him a steady presence in challenging situations, akin to a lighthouse guiding ships through stormy seas.

His love for the outdoors was evident in the many family camping trips to iconic locations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and Sequoia National Park. These experiences created cherished memories for his family, who remember him as a devoted husband and father.

Legacy and Memories

David leaves behind a rich tapestry of family connections. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Brest (née McElroy), and three stepchildren: Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst. He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, and Casey and Jay Pabst. Additionally, he is remembered by his niece and nephews, including Carol (James) Brest Hare and Brian (Lonni) Brest, as well as Art (Donna), Mike (Cathy) Brest, and Matthew Brest.

David’s ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove near the meadow where he and Patricia were married, symbolizing his deep connection to the natural world and the love he shared with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Herbert Brest, his oldest brother Loren Brest, and his twin brother Dennis Brest.

His family and friends will forever hold dear the memories of a man whose steady presence and love enriched their lives. David E. Brest will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
