BREAKING: The Hungarian government has just announced the auction of the historic Finance Ministry palace in central Budapest, with a starting bid of over HUF 35 billion (approximately €90 million). This urgent sale begins at 8:00 AM on March 17, 2024, and will conclude at 9:00 PM on March 19, 2024, via the state’s electronic auction platform.

This iconic building, located at 2–4 József nádor Square, is not just a property; it’s a landmark that has stood at the heart of Hungary’s economic history since its completion in 1909. Designed by renowned architect Ignác Alpár, the palace has over 27,000 square meters of floor space and is protected as a historic monument, forming part of the UNESCO-listed panorama of the Danube.

The auction follows a previous unsuccessful attempt last autumn, where the government set the starting price at HUF 37.6 billion but received no bids. This time, the starting price has been reduced to HUF 35.2 billion, a strategic move aimed at attracting potential buyers. However, the future owner must allow the Ministry for National Economy, led by Márton Nagy, to continue occupying the building free of charge until September 1, 2026.

Criticism is mounting regarding the timing of this auction, particularly with upcoming elections. Critics, including transport expert and former state secretary Dávid Vitézy, have raised concerns about the short bidding window, stating that historic buildings of this significance are typically sold with a well-defined preservation plan. Allegations have also surfaced that such valuable state properties could fall into the hands of government-affiliated circles, including connections to businessman István Tiborcz. The government has yet to respond to these accusations.

What happens next? The auction’s outcome could shape the future of this historic site and influence public sentiment as Hungary approaches its elections. Stay tuned for updates as this developing story unfolds!
