Italy Withdraws Troops from Erbil Base After Missile Strike
UPDATE: Italy is withdrawing its remaining troops from the military base in Erbil, northern Iraq, following a missile strike that hit the facility. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed this urgent decision on Thursday, stating the planned drawdown was already in motion prior to the incident.
The missile strike occurred earlier today, but thankfully, there were no casualties or injuries among the Italian personnel. All troops have been reported safe after relocating to protected areas as part of pre-planned security measures. Crosetto highlighted that 102 personnel have already returned to Italy, while approximately 40 others have been repositioned to Jordan.
Crosetto described the withdrawal as logistically complex, indicating that the remaining troops would leave the base by land rather than air, likely traveling through Turkey. “This is a NATO base,” Crosetto remarked, addressing concerns over whether the attack was intentional, emphasizing that the facility also supports US military infrastructure.
The backdrop to this incident is the escalating conflict involving Iran, which has seen a rise in hostilities following US and Israeli strikes that began on February 28. Iranian retaliation has included drone and missile attacks across the region. As tensions rise, the safety of allied forces, including Hungarian troops deployed in Iraq, becomes increasingly precarious.
The immediate implications for Hungary are significant, as any sustained escalation around critical coalition facilities could heighten the risk for its troops stationed in Iraq. Crosetto’s remarks underscore the urgency of the situation, with security measures having been implemented in anticipation of potential attacks.
With the situation developing rapidly, the international community is closely monitoring these events. The next steps for the Italian military will be crucial in ensuring the safe return of their remaining personnel. As tensions continue to mount, the impact on regional stability remains a pressing concern.
