Lakers Aim for Season Sweep Over Timberwolves in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Lakers will seek to complete a season sweep of the Minnesota Timberwolves in their matchup on March 5, 2024. The Lakers have already secured the season series against their Western Conference rivals, having won both previous encounters earlier this season.
The first meeting took place on October 24, 2023, where the Lakers triumphed with a score of 128-110. Just five days later, the teams faced off again in Minneapolis, with the Lakers narrowly winning 116-115. In that opening game, Luka Doncic delivered a standout performance, scoring 49 points, which remains his highest point total of the season.
The Lakers currently sit in fifth place in the Western Conference, just one game behind the Timberwolves, who are in third. The significance of the tiebreaker could play a crucial role in the playoff race, given that the Lakers have already defeated Minnesota twice.
In their most recent outing, the Lakers achieved a convincing 110-97 victory against the New York Knicks, marking their fifth win in six games. Doncic contributed 35 points and eight rebounds, while Austin Reaves added 25 points. This game was notable as LeBron James sat out due to a left elbow contusion and left foot soreness. The Lakers established a commanding lead, which they maintained throughout the match.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Reaves stated, “I just thought we played hard, stuck to the game plan and competed. That’s what it came down to. I thought we played harder than them and we set the tone early and had a really good third quarter.”
Center Deandre Ayton made a return after missing several games due to left knee soreness, contributing eight rebounds in 20 minutes. If James is unable to play on Tuesday, it will mark the third consecutive game against Minnesota that he has missed, having previously dealt with sciatica at the season’s start.
In contrast, the Timberwolves are coming off a disappointing 119-92 loss to the Orlando Magic, which ended their five-game winning streak. Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 34 points, but the team struggled overall, shooting just 35.7% from the field and a dismal 22.5% from three-point range. This performance represented their lowest scoring output of the season.
Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch expressed concern over the team’s offensive rhythm, noting, “I thought finishing around the rim was not good. The 3s looked really deep, kind of like need-to-get-shots-up type 3s. There was no rhythm to the offense, really.”
Defensively, the Timberwolves were called for 21 fouls compared to 24 for the Magic. Rudy Gobert acknowledged the team’s need for mental resilience, stating, “We were not the team that we want to be mentally. We have to be more resilient, whether it’s bad calls or when the shots don’t go in or when things don’t go our way. We gotta be tougher.”
Edwards participated only in the first game against the Lakers, scoring 31 points, but missed the subsequent meeting due to a right hamstring strain. As the teams prepare for their third clash of the season, the Lakers are poised to leverage their previous successes against the Timberwolves in pursuit of a crucial win.
