Kidd Evaluates Flagg’s Role as Mavericks Start Season
UPDATE: Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd has praised Cooper Flagg for his impressive performance as the starting point guard in the team’s final preseason games, but he remains noncommittal about keeping the 18-year-old rookie in that role as the season approaches. Following a decisive 121-94 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at T-Mobile Arena on October 18, 2023, Kidd emphasized the need for further evaluation before finalizing the lineup.
Kidd noted, “There’s a lot of good, positive stories here, and we have some time to make a decision,” highlighting the urgency of determining Flagg’s position ahead of the season opener. Flagg stepped into the point guard role after starting the first two preseason games at forward, the position he held at Duke. He averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists during his time at point guard.
Flagg’s transition to point guard comes as part of a supersized starting lineup that includes Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, Anthony Davis, and Dereck Lively II. However, Kidd expressed concerns about the team’s offensive rhythm during the early stages of Wednesday’s game, where the Mavericks fell behind 22-10 before Flagg exited the game. “Our offense was too stagnant,” he said, pointing out the need for more playmaking and perimeter shooting.
Despite the challenges, Flagg’s ability to manage the game has drawn praise. “He’s done an incredible job of handling the situation of running the team,” Kidd stated. Flagg acknowledged areas for improvement, saying, “I made some mental lapses today. Just got to stay more attached [defensively]. Can’t let a hot player keep getting looks.” Flagg faced a tough matchup against Gabe Vincent, who scored 18 points in the first few minutes of the game, making five three-pointers.
As the Mavericks prepare for the regular season, the coaching staff will monitor Flagg’s development closely. “The more he’s in these situations, the more he’ll benefit in the long run,” Kidd added, indicating confidence in Flagg’s potential to adapt and thrive.
The Mavericks’ season opener is fast approaching, and fans are eager to see how Flagg’s role will evolve. With the team’s performance under scrutiny, every decision made in the coming days could have significant ramifications for their season trajectory.
