Sebastian Rancik Likely Out for CU Buffs vs. No. 2 Arizona
UPDATE: The Colorado Buffaloes are poised to face major challenges as sophomore forward Sebastian Rancik is likely to remain sidelined for their crucial showdown against No. 2 Arizona on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the CU Events Center, scheduled for 9 p.m. MT on ESPN2.
Developing newsTad Boyle hinted at this possibility during a press conference, stating that the team “probably won’t have him” available as they aim to end a daunting 14-game losing streak against ranked opponents.
Rancik has been a key player for Colorado, ranking third on the team in scoring with an average of 12.3 points and second in rebounding at 5.6 rebounds per game. His absence could significantly impact the Buffaloes’ strategy against a powerhouse like Arizona, which has already clinched the regular season title in the Big 12.
This season, Rancik has shown flashes of brilliance, scoring in double figures in 14 of the first 16 games before facing a rough patch in January. However, his recent performance included averaging 7.6 rebounds over six games and achieving his first career double-double against Arizona State with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
“Development is a process,” Boyle remarked. “You look at the numbers side-by-side as sophomores, Seby’s ahead of the game. He’s not behind Tristan. He’s ahead of Tristan.”
This matchup against Arizona is not just a regular season finale; it holds critical implications for Colorado’s positioning in the upcoming Big 12 Conference tournament. Currently, the Buffs sit at 7-10 in league play, tied for 11th with Arizona State but owning the tiebreaker thanks to a two-game sweep over the Sun Devils.
Should Colorado lose to the Wildcats and Arizona State pull off an upset against No. 6 Iowa State, the Buffs could drop to the 12th seed in the conference tournament. The first round is set for Tuesday, and the Buffs will either face Oklahoma State or Baylor depending on the final standings.
The stakes are high: a victory could secure the Buffs the No. 11 seed, leading to a game at 7:30 p.m. MT, while a loss could push them to the No. 12 seed, which would see them play in the early match at 10:30 a.m. MT. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
In related news, multiple sources have reported that former CU assistant Kim English is expected to part ways with Providence, raising interest in the coaching landscape. Additionally, former Buffs walk-on Amondo Miller Jr. has been named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year at Lubbock Christian University, averaging 20.8 points and 8.4 rebounds this season.
As the Buffs prepare for this pivotal clash, all eyes will be on the CU Events Center on Saturday night. Can Colorado find a way to overcome the odds without one of their leading scorers? Fans and analysts alike are eager to find out.
