32% of Consumers Use AI Daily; Trust Issues Persist, Says Survey
URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking survey reveals that 32% of consumers are now using artificial intelligence (AI) every single day, a significant shift in digital behavior. The 2026 AI Consumer Insights Survey, conducted by Shift Browser, highlights a growing reliance on AI while exposing widespread trust issues among users.
According to the survey of over 1,400 individuals, more than half of respondents express that AI enhances their online experiences. However, as AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily tasks, users are demanding greater control over these technologies. The question looms: who is truly in charge of AI?
The survey underscores the necessity for customization, with 51% of users prioritizing the ability to tailor AI features to their needs. While AI is embraced for its utility, a notable 26% of users find it challenging to manage or disable AI functionalities, signaling a crucial “control gap” that developers must address to maintain user satisfaction.
Privacy concerns remain at the forefront, with a staggering 81% of participants worried about AI accessing their private conversations and data. Trust in AI answer engines is low, with only 16% of users expressing significant confidence in these systems. Yet, despite skepticism, 58% admit that AI has influenced their opinions at least once, indicating a complex relationship between users and technology.
The survey also reveals rising anxiety around the next generation of AI—agentic systems that perform tasks autonomously. Approximately 44% of participants fear unauthorized actions taken by AI. However, nearly half are open to these autonomous features, provided there is transparent oversight, stating, “You can do the work, but I need to see what you’re doing.”
Age disparities further complicate AI adoption. Users aged 25 to 34 are the most frequent adopters, while about 20% of the population, primarily individuals over 65, still refrain from using AI technology.
Emerging concerns about sustainability are also prominent, with 57% of respondents worried about the substantial energy consumption associated with AI systems.
When it comes to AI applications, the research indicates that 54% of users employ AI as a research assistant, 34% for summarizing long articles, and 32% for automating tedious tasks. The key takeaway? Users want assurance that they can seize control whenever necessary.
With AI’s rapid integration into daily life, the findings from the 2026 AI Consumer Insights Survey serve as a pivotal reminder of the need for balance between innovation and user trust. As developers respond to these concerns, the trajectory of AI adoption will be critical to monitor in the coming years.
