US forces have utilized Iranian-inspired kamikaze drones for the first time in combat, marking a significant development in military operations. This deployment occurred during Operation Epic Fury, targeting key installations of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) across Iran. The drones, known as the Low-Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS), were launched to strike command hubs, air defenses, missile and drone launch sites, and military airfields, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).

In a statement on social media platform X, CENTCOM highlighted that this operation represents a historical moment, as Task Force Scorpion Strike engages one-way attack drones in combat for the first time. These low-cost drones, modeled after Iran’s Shahed-136, are now being used to deliver what CENTCOM described as “American-made retribution.” Each LUCAS drone is approximately priced at $35,000 and can be launched using either a catapult or rocket-assisted takeoff, making them lighter and more adaptable than their Iranian counterparts.

The initial drone was introduced during a December 2023 drill involving the USS Santa Barbara in the Arabian Gulf. CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper expressed confidence in the operation, stating, “The President ordered bold action, and our brave Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, and Coast Guardsmen are answering the call.”

The situation escalated dramatically when US and Israeli forces conducted airstrikes on Iran on the same day, resulting in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. President Trump confirmed Khamenei’s death, describing it as “justice” for the Iranian people and others affected by his regime. In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Khamenei as “one of the most evil people in history.”

The airstrikes also reportedly resulted in the deaths of 40 senior Iranian officials, including the head of the IRGC. Following these events, Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones targeting US bases and facilities in several Middle Eastern countries, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Jordan. The Israeli military confirmed that their operations would continue, indicating that the military campaign in Iran could extend over several weeks.

As the situation develops, both US and Israeli officials remain on high alert, closely monitoring Iran’s response and preparing for further military actions if necessary. The use of LUCAS drones marks a new chapter in the ongoing tensions in the region, showcasing the innovative approach taken by US forces in countering threats from Iran.
