Jokowi Supports Reinstating Old KPK Law, Tanak Responds Firmly
President Joko Widodo has expressed his support for reinstating the previous version of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law (UU KPK) in Indonesia. This statement drew a strong response from Johanis Tanak, the Vice Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), who emphasized the law’s significance and its implications for the commission’s work.
In a conversation on February 15, 2026, Tanak articulated his concerns regarding the idea of reverting to the old law. He stated, “What is there to return? The law is not an item that can be borrowed and easily returned when no longer needed.” He reinforced that the KPK operates under the current laws and is focused on preventing and combating corruption, not merely revising legislation.
Tanak highlighted that the KPK’s function relies on both the old and new versions of the UU KPK. Under the new law, the legal status of KPK employees has been clarified, defining them as civil servants. He underscored the importance of maintaining KPK’s independence, insisting that any legislative changes should ensure that the commission remains within the judicial framework. “If we want the KPK to work independently without interference from other institutions, the amendments to the UU KPK should clearly place the KPK within the judicial branch, alongside the Supreme Court,” Tanak stated.
This discussion comes at a critical time for Indonesia, as the fight against corruption remains a pressing issue. The KPK has been a central figure in the government’s efforts to address corruption, but its authority has faced challenges in recent years. The legal framework supporting the KPK’s operations has been a subject of intense debate, with proponents of the previous law arguing it offered stronger tools to combat corruption.
As Indonesia navigates this complex landscape, the dialogue surrounding the UU KPK will likely continue to evolve. Observers will be watching closely to see how these discussions impact the KPK’s operations and the broader anti-corruption agenda in the country.
