Tom Steyer Launches Progressive Campaign for California Governor
Tom Steyer, a billionaire businessman and progressive activist, has announced his candidacy for governor of California in the upcoming election. As one of over a dozen Democratic candidates, Steyer presents a unique blend of wealth and populism, positioning himself as a voice for working Californians. During an interview with Inside California Politics host Nikki Laurenzo on February 14, 2026, he discussed his motivations and plans for addressing the state’s pressing issues.
Steyer’s Business Background and Political Activism
Steyer, who made billions in the finance sector, has transitioned from business to activism, signing the Giving Pledge to dedicate a majority of his fortune to charitable causes. He described his journey as one of increasing frustration with systemic inequalities. “As I got into the system and saw it, I got more and more upset about the injustices of the system,” he noted. Unlike many wealthy candidates who leave their positions to enter politics, Steyer has spent over a decade advocating for progressive issues while financing campaigns both for and against various propositions in California.
With no prior experience in public office, Steyer first entered the political arena during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. He is financing his current campaign largely through personal funds, significantly outpacing his competitors in advertising efforts. His commercials often emphasize his discontent with corporate influence in politics, stating, “This system is rigged against working people.”
Addressing Housing and Economic Inequality
In his dialogue with Laurenzo, Steyer expressed a strong commitment to combating income inequality, highlighting the need for innovative solutions. “I’m not opposed to people coming here and making a fortune… But they’re citizens of California… so I expect people to pay their fair share,” he stated. His campaign includes ambitious proposals, such as building one million affordable homes within four years. This goal contrasts with current Governor Gavin Newsom‘s plan to construct 3.5 million units by 2025, a target the state has struggled to meet.
Steyer acknowledged that there is no simple solution to California’s housing crisis, calling for a multifaceted approach he describes as “silver buckshot.” He advocates for reforms in permitting, zoning, and the promotion of manufactured homes. “I believe in environmental regulation, but we have too many people regulating, too many permits,” he commented, suggesting that streamlining these processes could help alleviate housing shortages.
In addition to housing, Steyer outlined his strategy for generating revenue to address California’s structural deficit. He believes that by closing corporate tax loopholes, the state could raise between $15 billion to $20 billion annually. His approach seeks to ensure that large corporations contribute fairly to the state’s economy, emphasizing the importance of a balanced fiscal policy.
As the gubernatorial race heats up, Steyer’s candidacy presents a compelling challenge to the traditional political landscape in California. His blend of business acumen and progressive values aims to resonate with voters seeking change in a state grappling with significant economic disparities.
