Students Transform Soil Health Practices at Chico State Farm
UPDATE: Students at Chico State University are making significant strides in soil health improvement, conducting urgent tests to implement regenerative agricultural practices. On February 4, 2026, students Kaylee Mulhearn and Paige Flaig were spotted at the university’s farm, actively analyzing soil samples to create optimal conditions for crop growth.
The duo, part of the Center for Regenerative Agriculture and Resilient Systems, is dedicated to partnering with local producers across California to promote sustainable farming techniques. “This is the soil processing area, and we aim to implement more regenerative practices,” Flaig stated, underscoring the pressing need for environmentally-friendly methods in agriculture.
Today, the students focused on various soil tests to measure nutrient qualities and stability, essential for enhancing soil health. “We are conducting side-by-side comparisons and field analysis,” Flaig explained. They collect soil samples at different depths to evaluate its ability to retain water and maintain stability through biological processes.
Mulhearn added, “We also conduct carbon-nitrogen testing and send samples to a lab in Montana for pH level analysis.” This comprehensive approach aims to highlight the differences between regenerative and conventional farming practices, which is vital for future agricultural sustainability.
The long-term vision is clear: to assist farmers in utilizing natural processes more efficiently, ultimately reducing reliance on synthetic materials. “We try to work with nature instead of against it,” Flaig said, emphasizing the urgency of these practices in today’s farming landscape.
As the agricultural sector faces increasing pressure from climate change and resource depletion, initiatives like those at Chico State are crucial. The impact on local farmers could be transformative, potentially lowering costs and improving crop yields while preserving the environment.
