Wall Street Journal Blasts Stephen Miller’s Immigration Chaos
UPDATE: The Wall Street Journal has sharply criticized Stephen Miller’s immigration policies, labeling them as spiraling out of control. In a scathing editorial published today, the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper reveals how the Trump administration’s deportation efforts have devolved into an “undisciplined” mess, straying from its initial commitment to target only criminals.
The editorial board asserts that Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff in the White House, has abandoned the promise to prioritize serious offenders in favor of a broader and more chaotic deportation strategy. “Ending migrant chaos at the border was necessary after the Biden administration. But Miller’s mass deportation and zero-immigration policy is building distrust,” the Journal states, emphasizing that public safety justifications for enforcement are losing credibility.
Tensions have escalated in Minneapolis following the recent killings of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents. President Donald Trump reported having a “very good call” with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to address growing unrest between anti-ICE protesters and federal law enforcement. The controversy intensified when Miller made incendiary claims about Pretti, alleging he was a “would-be assassin,” despite evidence showing Pretti never brandished a weapon during the incident.
The editorial points out that the Trump administration’s narrative of targeting only “the worst of the worst” criminal migrants is increasingly questioned. According to the Deportation Data Project, 87 percent of ICE arrests in early 2025 involved immigrants with prior convictions or pending charges. However, a follow-up study by the Cato Institute revealed that as of October 2025, 73 percent of individuals detained by ICE had no criminal record, and nearly half had neither a conviction nor pending charges.
The backlash against the administration intensified last week when ICE detained a 5-year-old boy during a raid in Minnesota, further igniting public outrage. The Journal’s editorial board contends that the administration’s rhetoric on deporting criminals starkly contrasts with its broader approach of mass deportations.
As ICE operations increasingly target businesses, schools, and homes, scenes of arrests involving families and long-time residents are becoming commonplace. The editorial warns that this approach is turning immigration enforcement into a significant political liability for Republicans.
The Daily Beast has reached out to the White House for comment as the situation continues to evolve. As public sentiment shifts, the implications of these policies could reverberate through the upcoming election cycle, making it crucial for all eyes to remain on this developing story.
