Ludington Shocks Shelby with 44-30 Win in Girls Basketball Upset
UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the Ludington girls basketball team pulled off a major upset by defeating the previously unbeaten Shelby team 44-30 on January 26, 2023. This significant victory took place during a West Michigan Conference crossover matchup, sending shockwaves through the local sports community.
The Orioles, who had faced a challenging non-conference schedule earlier this season—including tough losses to Grand Haven and Coopersville—turned adversity into triumph. Ludington surged ahead with a 27-19 lead in the first half and finished strong with a decisive 9-3 run to secure the win.
“This was a very good win against a very talented and well-coached Shelby basketball team,” said Ludington head coach Warren Stowe. “I was very happy with our energy and play throughout the entire 32 minutes. We played through some rough spots that we may have faltered through earlier in the season. This shows tremendous growth for this team.”
Leading the charge for Ludington was Eloise Kwietniewski, who scored 14 points. Other notable contributors included Madelyn Kenyon with 8 points, Claire Keith with 7 points, and Jaelyn Laird with 5 points. On the other side, Shelby’s Jayna Burmeister recorded a double-double with 12 points and an impressive 19 rebounds, while Ava Lamberg added 6 points.
In other Muskegon-area girls basketball action, the Spring Lake Lakers dominated Holland with a score of 43-12, showcasing a smothering defensive effort. Kloe George led Spring Lake with 9 points as they improved to 8-2 overall.
Meanwhile, the Newaygo Lions secured a convincing 57-27 victory over Howard City Tri County, thanks to a remarkable 19-2 run in the second quarter. Gabby Arney shone with 19 points, while Amaya Lathrop and Ruby Hughes each delivered double-doubles to propel Newaygo to 5-4 on the season.
North Muskegon edged Mason County Central 38-32 in a tightly contested matchup. Delaney Young led the Norse with 18 points, while Coach Jill Young expressed pride in the team’s continual improvement.
In another exciting game, Manistee defeated Holton 69-53, with Alayna Edmondson leading the Mariners with 24 points. Manistee coach Kenn Kott praised the team’s resilience, especially as they played much of the first half without two key players due to foul trouble.
As the week progresses, fans can look forward to more thrilling matchups. Notable games scheduled for January 27 include Grand Haven facing Muskegon at 7 p.m. and Spring Lake taking on Hart, promising more action from the Muskegon-area teams.
With these exciting developments in girls basketball, the momentum is building as teams continue to battle for supremacy in the West Michigan Conference. Stay tuned for more updates as the season unfolds!
