Minnesota Activist Releases Arrest Video After White House Manipulation
A Minnesota activist and civil rights attorney, Nekima Levy Armstrong, has released her own video of her arrest during an anti-immigration enforcement protest, following the posting of a manipulated image by the White House. The incident took place on March 14, 2024, at a church where an official from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) serves as a pastor.
The White House shared a photo on its X page, depicting Levy Armstrong in distress, which was captioned: “Arrested far-left agitator Nekima Levy Armstrong for orchestrating church riots in Minnesota.” In contrast, a separate post by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem displayed the same image but showed Levy Armstrong with a neutral expression. These contrasting portrayals sparked significant public interest and concern regarding the authenticity of the White House’s representation.
Levy Armstrong was arrested along with at least two others during a protest aimed at condemning ICE’s actions. Reports confirm that she and another protester, Chauntyll Allen, a member of the St. Paul school board, were released the following day, March 15, 2024, according to the Racial Justice Network, an organization led by Levy Armstrong.
The video, captured by her husband, Marques Armstrong, shows federal agents approaching her for the arrest. Levy Armstrong can be heard requesting to be treated with “dignity and respect.” During the encounter, one agent records the incident while stating, “It’s not going to be on anything like that,” emphasizing the need to avoid spreading a “false narrative.”
Throughout the more than seven-minute video, Levy Armstrong maintains composure, discussing the implications of her arrest. “You know that this is a significant abuse of power,” she asserts, highlighting her commitment to speaking out against the actions of ICE. The agent filming responds, “I’m not in here to get in a political debate,” indicating a reluctance to engage in broader discussions.
In an audio message shared through her spokesperson, Levy Armstrong claims that the manipulated images represent a form of political persecution. “We are being politically persecuted for speaking out against authoritarianism, fascism, and the tyranny of the Trump administration,” she stated, emphasizing the serious nature of the situation and the implications for civil rights.
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding this incident. This episode highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States and the complex interactions between activists and government authorities.
As the situation unfolds, it raises questions about the role of media representation in shaping public perceptions of protests and the actions taken by law enforcement. The contrasting portrayals of Levy Armstrong’s arrest underscore the necessity for transparency and accuracy in reporting such significant incidents.
