Central Montcalm Parent Banned from School Property Amid Allegations
Stanton, Michigan — On January 7, 2024, Aaron Tabor, a parent of a student at Central Montcalm Public Schools, raised serious allegations of emotional abuse against school administrators during a Board of Education meeting. On the same day, district officials restricted Tabor’s access to school property, citing concerns over his alleged aggressive behavior.
Tabor addressed the Board during the public comment session, claiming that his daughter and other students were subjected to intimidation and manipulation by middle/high school staff. He specifically named Principal Jeff Wernette, Dean of Students Tyler Lussier, and Assistant Principal Ed Beickman as individuals responsible for these actions. Tabor described a situation where his daughter was allegedly coerced into discussing vaping, despite having no involvement in such activities.
According to Tabor, the school’s approach involved encouraging students to report on their peers, which he viewed as a form of psychological manipulation. He stated, “They are tactfully sending messages to kids… that ruins their social experience. Once their social experience is ruined, it ruins their educational experience.” He expressed concerns that this pattern of behavior could have lasting impacts on his daughter’s academic journey.
Tabor reported that he had previously discussed these issues with Superintendent Mandy McLaughlin, who assured him that the behavior would be addressed. However, he claimed that Wernette contradicted this assurance, insisting that the methods would continue. Tabor added that he felt “stonewalled” in his efforts to protect his daughter from what he described as an abusive environment.
Tabor’s access to school property was formally restricted following a meeting on January 6, where district officials deemed his behavior threatening. In a letter, McLaughlin noted that Tabor had raised his voice and made aggressive statements, including threats to the staff. The letter stipulated that Tabor could attend school functions only with prior approval from the principal and would be allowed in the parking lot during drop-off and pick-up times.
In response to Tabor’s allegations, McLaughlin stated, “We are aware of a parent’s concerns that have been brought to the attention of district administration and the Board of Education.” She emphasized the district’s commitment to maintaining student confidentiality while addressing any issues that arise.
The situation drew the attention of the Stanton Police Department, which confirmed that they had served Tabor a letter from the school district. Chief Matthew Pumford stated that while they had received a complaint regarding the enforcement of the school’s anti-vaping policy, there was insufficient evidence to support allegations of criminal conduct.
Tabor’s concerns were further explored through a Freedom of Information Act request, revealing a series of emails exchanged with school officials. In these communications, Tabor expressed his frustrations and warned of potential legal actions if the issues were not resolved. He emphasized the negative impact on his daughter’s well-being and academic performance.
The Central Montcalm school board is scheduled to meet again on February 4, 2024, for a workshop, followed by a regular meeting on February 16. All meetings are open to the public, which may provide further opportunities for discussion on this unfolding situation.
The restrictions placed on Tabor will be reviewed at the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year. McLaughlin concluded her letter to Tabor by reiterating the district’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for both students and staff, highlighting the importance of addressing behavior that could compromise that safety.
