Family Builds Tiny Home for Mom, Saving $30,000 in Costs
UPDATE: A Texas family has successfully built a tiny home for their mother, saving approximately $30,000 compared to contractor quotes. Yeli Heidecker and her husband undertook this urgent project to provide their mother with a more permanent living space amid her recent health struggles.
Yeli Heidecker, a 32-year-old mother of four, revealed that her mother had been living in an RV on their property since 2024 due to health issues. The decision to build a tiny home arose when they received shocking quotes for construction—one contractor estimated a price of $63,000 for a 20-by-15-foot home. With costs exceeding their budget, the Heideckers took matters into their own hands.
In September 2025, while Yeli’s mother visited family in Mexico, the couple began the ambitious project. They hired professionals to construct the exterior shell and pour the concrete floor but did the rest themselves. The family worked tirelessly to complete the build before Yeli’s mother returned.
Heidecker described the project as both challenging and rewarding, stating, “We were literally looking everything up and watching videos.” This DIY approach brought significant savings, with the total cost for the tiny home coming in at around $33,000, which included all materials and labor.
The tiny home, designed to resemble the couple’s own barndominium, features an open-concept living area, a cozy kitchen, and a comfortable bedroom with ample storage. Yeli noted that her mother now enjoys a space that feels more like home. “It makes her feel more at home,” she said, highlighting the emotional impact of their efforts.
Construction concluded in November 2025, although the bathroom remained unfinished. Yeli’s mother has been using the main house’s facilities in the meantime. The family plans to complete the bathroom soon, ensuring it meets all needs as her mother ages.
The project not only provided a permanent living solution for Yeli’s mother but also strengthened family bonds. Yeli’s children frequently visit their grandmother, finding joy in their new arrangement. “My 2-year-old will literally get out of the house and walk to grandma’s house,” Yeli shared with a laugh.
For others considering similar projects, Yeli advises embracing the journey, despite its challenges. “It’s so fun, especially when you’re doing it yourself,” she said, encouraging others to take on DIY home projects.
As this heartwarming story continues to inspire families, the Heideckers demonstrate the profound impact of creating a loving, supportive living environment. Stay tuned for further updates on the completion of the tiny home and more insights into this family’s journey.
