Protests in Iran Claim 646 Lives as Trump Considers Military Action
UPDATE: The death toll from ongoing anti-government protests in Iran has surged to 646, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). The protests, which have spread across 187 cities in all 31 provinces, have resulted in at least 10,721 arrests over the past 16 days of unrest. This alarming escalation is raising urgent international concerns, particularly as U.S. President Donald Trump weighs military options for intervention.
The HRANA report indicates that among the deceased are 505 protesters and nine children. Iranian state media claims that more than 100 security personnel have died, while HRANA reports that 133 military and security officials have been killed since the protests began. The Iranian government has not disclosed any official death tolls during this crisis.
In a significant move, Trump announced a 25% tariff on any country conducting business with Iran, effective immediately. His statement cautioned that “any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America.” This announcement comes as Trump’s national security team prepares to meet at the White House to discuss potential interventions in Iran.
The U.S. State Department has issued a security alert, urging American citizens to leave Iran, citing “escalating” protests and increased security measures. The alert warns of ongoing internet outages and encourages U.S. citizens to consider departing via land routes to Armenia or Turkey.
Protests erupted in late December 2023, initially focused on rising inflation and the devaluation of the national currency, the rial. As the unrest intensified, demonstrators began openly opposing the government, with security forces reportedly using tear gas and live ammunition to suppress gatherings. A nationwide internet shutdown has been ongoing for several days, with monitoring group NetBlocks confirming that it has lasted over 108 hours.
Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have characterized the protests as a product of foreign interference, referring to demonstrators as “rioters” and “terrorists.” Despite their claims of willingness to address economic grievances, the government has deployed heavy-handed tactics against protesters.
In a call to action, Reza Pahlavi, Iran’s exiled crown prince, urged Trump to support the protesters. “I have called the people to the streets to fight for their freedom and to overwhelm the security forces with sheer numbers,” Pahlavi stated on social media. He emphasized the urgency of international support, saying, “Your threat to this criminal regime has also kept the regime’s thugs at bay. But time is of the essence.”
As the situation continues to evolve, the world watches closely for the next steps from both the Iranian government and U.S. officials. With protests growing increasingly violent, many fear further escalation that could lead to broader conflict in the region.
