Atlanta Falcons Pursue Seahawks’ Aden Durde for Head Coach Role

The Atlanta Falcons have officially requested an interview with Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde as they seek a new head coach following the dismissal of Raheem Morris. This marks Durde’s second interview request during the current hiring cycle, as he previously interviewed with the Cleveland Browns.

Durde’s reputation has grown significantly within the league, particularly after leading the Seahawks to the No. 1 scoring defense this past season. His defensive unit also ranked first in the NFL based on Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA). Although Durde does not call plays, his contributions to Seattle’s success are notable.

The Falcons are undergoing a significant transition after ending their season on a four-game winning streak, leading to the decision to part ways with Morris. In addition to interviewing Durde, Atlanta has also met with Klint Kubiak, the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator, who has been in demand across multiple teams looking for new coaching staff. Kubiak has reportedly engaged with six of the eight teams seeking head coaches, reflecting his strong candidacy in the league.

Durde’s ties to the Falcons are significant; he spent four seasons under former head coach Dan Quinn as both a defensive quality control coach and outside linebackers coach. This connection may enhance his prospects for the role. Furthermore, Atlanta is ensuring compliance with the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which mandates that teams interview at least two minority candidates for head coaching vacancies. The Falcons have also interviewed Anthony Weaver, the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, as part of this initiative.

As the search for a new head coach continues, the Falcons are also considering other candidates for various coaching positions. Jake Peetz, the team’s passing game coordinator, is set to interview for the vacant offensive coordinator position with the Detroit Lions.

The Falcons’ management, under the leadership of their new president, Matt Ryan, is keen to make strategic decisions that will reshape the franchise’s future. Ryan, a former MVP-winning quarterback for the team, is actively involved in this hiring process, signaling a new direction for the organization.
