Respiratory Illnesses Surge: Essentia Health Offers Timely Care Options
As respiratory illnesses rise across the region, Essentia Health is enhancing access to care through same-day and virtual options. This initiative aims to ensure individuals receive appropriate medical attention while alleviating pressure on emergency departments.
Increasing Demand for Healthcare Services
Recent data indicates that about one in three visits to emergency departments are for non-emergency conditions. In light of this, Essentia Health is urging patients to assess their symptoms and select the most suitable level of care. This approach not only secures timely medical assistance for patients but also helps maintain emergency services for those facing critical health issues.
Individuals feeling unwell should consider various alternatives based on their symptoms. Options include:
- 24/7 Video Visit On Demand: Accessible through the MyChart patient portal, providing care for urgent needs anytime, anywhere.
- E-Visit: Online consultations with Essentia providers available 24/7 for common conditions.
- Primary Care or Virtual Video Visit: Recommended for illnesses such as colds, flu, sore throats, and ear pain.
- Urgent Care or Walk-in Care: Suitable for symptoms like low-grade fever, migraines, or ongoing nausea.
Patients can also utilize a Wait Time Map to locate the nearest care facilities. Serious symptoms that necessitate a visit to the emergency department include breathing difficulties, chest pain, severe pain, sudden weakness, or confusion.
Health Resources and Support
For those uncertain about the appropriate course of action, Essentia has established a Nurse Care Line at 800-714-4646 and provides access to MyChart and its same-day care webpage. An online tool is also available to help individuals identify immediate care options.
“We have a number of ways to ensure our patients receive the right level of care, based on their symptoms,” stated Christie Erickson, a nurse practitioner and associate chief medical officer for Essentia’s East Market. “These include same-day options so we can get you in right away. We’re experiencing an especially challenging flu season, and we want to do everything we can to keep people healthy and out of the hospital.”
Specific to Essentia Health-Fargo, approximately 15% of emergency department visits in the past week were attributed to influenza. The latest data from the Minnesota Department of Health, recorded on December 21, 2023, reveals over 5,100 influenza cases statewide, a sharp increase from fewer than 1,900 cases just two weeks earlier. Additionally, elevated rates of COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are contributing to heightened demand for healthcare services.
In this context, Essentia Health’s proactive measures highlight the importance of seeking appropriate medical care, particularly during a demanding flu season. By utilizing available resources, patients can ensure they receive the care they need while supporting the overall efficiency of the healthcare system.
