BREAKING: M&T Bank has just announced the closure of eight branches located within Stop & Shop stores across Connecticut, as part of a strategic shift to meet evolving customer needs. The closures will take effect by April 30, with several locations shutting down as soon as April 16.

The affected branches include those at 2331 Dixwell Ave. in Hamden, 489 Bushy Hill Road in Simsbury, 200 E. Main St. in Stratford, and 50 Windsorville Road in Vernon, all scheduled to close on April 16. The remaining branches in Bridgeport, Milford, Westport, and Wilton will cease operations by April 30.

According to a spokesperson from M&T Bank, these branch locations will be replaced with standalone ATMs. Additionally, the bank confirmed that the closures will not lead to layoffs, as employees will be offered positions at other branches. The bank employs around 2,100 people statewide.

M&T Bank, based in New York, operates 155 bank branches and ATMs across Connecticut. The company previously merged with People’s United Bank in 2022, becoming a significant player in the state’s banking sector.

In a statement, a bank spokesperson emphasized, “As the needs of our customers continue to evolve, we are committed to adapting our branch network to best serve our communities.” The bank plans to invest in new standalone branches in Torrington and Waterbury to enhance customer service and accessibility.

These changes reflect M&T Bank’s ongoing assessment of its operations, ensuring they align with community needs. As the financial landscape shifts, customers can expect enhanced services and more convenient banking options moving forward.
