Beloved Mother and Community Leader Janice Gibson Cartwright Passes Away
Janice Gibson Cartwright, aged 86, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, surrounded by her family in Pauma Valley, California. Known for her warmth and kindness, Jan was a devoted mother, wife, and community leader, leaving behind a legacy of love and support for those who knew her.
Born on December 15, 1938, in Zion, Illinois, Jan grew up in a small Wisconsin town, where she distinguished herself as a dedicated student. She made history as the only girl in her high school class to attend college, moving to Madison to pursue her studies at the University of Wisconsin. It was here she met her future husband, John Cartwright, beginning a partnership that would last over six decades.
After completing her education, Jan became a home economics teacher in San Diego. She supported John as he embarked on his career in financial planning. The family welcomed their first daughter, Beth, before moving to Palos Verdes, where Jan focused on raising Beth and her two younger daughters, Pam and Sarah.
Jan was actively involved in her community, contributing her time and energy to organizations such as the National Charity League, Girl Scouts, and the PTA. Her leadership and warmth made her a beloved figure among parents and children alike.
In addition to her role as a mother, Jan played a crucial role in building and supporting her husband’s financial planning business. Her efforts helped establish a successful broker-dealer firm that is respected within the industry.
Jan lived a life characterized by kindness, humor, and resilience. She was a pillar of strength for her family, providing comfort and understanding to all who crossed her path. Her influence extended beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of countless friends and community members.
She is survived by her husband, John Cartwright; her daughters, Beth Carr, Pam Eckenrode, and Sarah Ehmann; and her eight grandchildren. Jan also leaves behind her brother, Jim Gibson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Evelyn Gibson; her brother, Jack Gibson; and her sister, Pam Webster.
A gathering to celebrate Jan’s life will take place in Pauma Valley at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those wishing to honor Jan’s memory to consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, a cause dear to her family. More information can be found at their official fundraising page: https://events.alz.org/fundraisers/bethcarr/honoring-jan-cartwright.
Janice Gibson Cartwright will be remembered not only for her contributions to her family and community but also for the love and joy she brought into the lives of so many.
