URGENT UPDATE: Google has just addressed a critical security vulnerability in its Chrome browser, affecting versions 143.0.7499.192/193 for Windows and macOS and 143.0.7499.192 for Linux. This high-risk flaw, identified as CVE-2026-0628, poses a significant threat if left unpatched, although it has not yet been exploited in the wild.

According to a blog post by Google’s Harry Souders, the vulnerability arises from “insufficient policy enforcement” within the WebView component. This means that external content could be loaded without proper origin checks, potentially exposing users to various security risks. The vulnerability was reported to Google by external researcher Gal Weizman at the end of November.

Users are urged to take immediate action by updating their Chrome browsers, which typically auto-update. To manually check for updates, navigate to Help > About Google Chrome. The same vulnerabilities have been addressed in the Android version of Chrome, now at 143.0.7499.193.

This update comes as Google prepares to release Chrome 144 on January 13, 2026. The urgency of this release highlights the importance of maintaining browser security amid escalating cyber threats.

Additionally, other Chromium-based browsers, including Microsoft Edge and Brave, are expected to follow suit with their own updates. Currently, they are running on Chromium 143, which is under scrutiny due to the recent security levels. Vivaldi, however, has opted to use the Extended Stable Channel from the previous version, indicating a cautious approach to these updates.

As browser vulnerabilities can have widespread implications for user security, it is critical for users to remain vigilant and ensure their software is up to date. The swift action taken by Google underscores the ongoing battle against cyber threats and the need for constant vigilance in digital safety.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation as Google and other browser manufacturers continue to address these urgent security concerns.
