UPDATE: A severe winter weather advisory is now in effect for Central Douglas County until 10 a.m. on January 12, 2024. The National Weather Service confirmed this advisory, warning residents of hazardous snow conditions that could severely impact travel.

Starting at 1 p.m. today, snow accumulation is expected to range from a dusting to 2 inches below 1,400 feet elevation, while areas above 2,500 feet may see between 3 to 6 inches of snow. Officials are urging residents to proceed with caution as travel may become dangerous, particularly during evening commutes and tomorrow morning.

The National Weather Service emphasized, “Travel may be difficult with delays in your commute. Slow down and use caution while traveling.” These winter conditions can lead to treacherous driving, contributing to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries annually.

Residents are advised to prepare for possible road closures and delays. If you must drive, consider these essential safety tips:

– **Share Your Travel Plans**: Inform family or friends of your destination, route, and estimated arrival time.
– **Prepare Your Vehicle**: Keep your gas tank full and equip your car with vital winter supplies, including a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
– **Stay Calm if Stranded**: If you become stranded, stay in your vehicle and notify someone about your situation. Signal for help by attaching a cloth to your antenna or mirror, and make your vehicle visible with dome lights and flashers.
– **Be Mindful of Snow Plows**: Allow snow plows plenty of room to operate safely and only overtake them when you have a clear view of the road ahead.
– **Check Road Conditions**: Always verify current road conditions before heading out to make informed travel decisions.

With dangerous weather on the horizon, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and take proactive measures. The National Weather Service continues to monitor conditions closely and will provide updates as necessary.

Stay safe and keep these tips in mind to reduce the risk of accidents during this challenging winter weather.
