Gators Secure Aaron Philo as New QB Amid Transfer Surge
UPDATE: The Florida Gators have officially secured quarterback Aaron Philo from Georgia Tech, a pivotal move announced just moments ago. Philo’s transfer comes as the Gators seek to revamp their roster following the departure of former quarterback DJ Lagway.
Philo revealed his decision on Instagram earlier today, confirming his transfer to Gainesville after a promising two-year stint with the Yellow Jackets. This strategic acquisition aligns with Gators’ new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, who previously coached Philo at Georgia Tech.
With Lagway’s transfer announcement on December 15, the timing of Philo’s move has been highly anticipated, particularly after Coach Jon Sumrall hired Faulkner on December 4. Philo joins a growing list of players entering the Gators’ program following the opening of the transfer portal last Friday, including former teammate Bailey Stockton and several others.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Philo is now in a competitive race for the starting quarterback position against redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. and true freshman Will Griffin. Jones, a former 4-star prospect, has seen action in two games at UF, while Griffin set impressive records at Tampa Jesuit.
During his time at Georgia Tech, Philo showcased his talent, completing 59 of 102 passes for 938 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions. His standout performance came during a game against Gardner Webb, where he threw for 373 yards in his only start. Philo also has a remarkable record from his high school days, throwing for a state record 13,922 passing yards at Prince Avenue Christian School.
The addition of Philo is crucial for the Gators as they look to solidify their quarterback position after Lagway’s departure, which stemmed from concerns over his injury history and significant financial implications. Philo’s familiarity with Faulkner’s system makes him a prime candidate to lead the Gators in the upcoming season.
As the Gators continue to evaluate their roster options, Philo’s entry marks a significant step in reshaping the team. Meanwhile, Lagway is exploring new opportunities, having recently visited Florida State and Virginia.
Expect further updates as Florida prepares for the next chapter in their football program, with Philo now at the forefront of their quarterback strategy.
