Arlington Police Department Opens Applications for 30th Community Academy
The Arlington County Police Department has officially opened applications for its 30th Community Police Academy (CPA), an initiative aimed at enhancing public engagement and understanding of law enforcement. The program serves as a platform to bridge the gap between police officers and community members, inviting them to learn more about policing in Arlington.
Deputy Chief Dave Giroux emphasized the significance of the CPA, stating, “The Community Police Academy continues to provide a unique educational and experiential opportunity for participants to learn about and discuss various aspects of policing in their community,” as noted by Arlingtonva.us. This 10-week program, commencing on February 26, 2026, will feature weekly sessions every Thursday, culminating in a special off-site Experience Day on a Saturday.
Program Details and Curriculum
Participants in the CPA will explore a range of topics essential to understanding law enforcement operations. These include recruitment processes, the legal framework of policing, use of force policies, and community outreach efforts. The Experience Day offers a unique opportunity for attendees to apply their knowledge in simulated scenarios, providing hands-on experience that has become a hallmark of the CPA’s three-decade tradition.
The classes will take place at the Arlington County Courthouse, while the Experience Day will be hosted at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy in Ashburn, Virginia. Participants will engage with both sworn and civilian staff, creating an environment that fosters interaction and transparency regarding the realities of daily policing.
Eligibility and Application Process
Residents and individuals associated with the Arlington community who are aged 18 and older are encouraged to apply. The application process includes a criminal history check; however, prior records will be considered on a case-by-case basis rather than automatically disqualifying applicants. This approach aims to include a diverse range of perspectives within the program.
Applications must be submitted online by January 25, 2026. The CPA encourages a balanced enrollment to reflect Arlington’s diverse population, welcoming not only local residents but also those working or studying in the area. Class size is limited to enhance personal learning experiences and facilitate effective dialogue between participants and facilitators.
For further information and detailed application instructions, interested individuals can visit the Arlington County Police Department’s official website. This program represents a significant opportunity for community involvement and deeper understanding of the police’s role within society.
