Hornets Shock Thunder with 27-Point Loss, OKC’s Worst of Season
UPDATE: In a stunning upset, the Charlotte Hornets delivered the Oklahoma City Thunder their worst loss of the season, defeating them 124-97 on Monday night. This shocking result marks a significant turn for the Thunder, who had been dominating the NBA standings.
Brandon Miller led the Hornets with an impressive 28 points, while Kon Knueppel contributed 23 points. The Hornets, who had lost three of their previous four games, capitalized on an opportunity against a Thunder team that was heavily favored by 15.5 points according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
The defeat marks a pivotal moment for Oklahoma City, as this is their first loss to a team with a losing record since November 19, 2024. The Thunder had previously won an astonishing 45 consecutive games against teams below .500 and held a remarkable 50-2 record over the last two seasons.
In a game where the Thunder struggled offensively, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander managed to score 21 points, extending his streak to 108 games with at least 20 points, the second-longest in NBA history. However, his shooting performance was lackluster, hitting only 7 of 21 shots for a season-low 33% field goal percentage. Notably, he sat out the fourth quarter not due to a lead, but because the Thunder were trailing by too much.
The Thunder, who started the season with a blistering 24-1 record, now stand at 30-7, facing their second consecutive loss and a troubling trend at home. They made only 8 of 15 free throws in the first half, and the team’s overall performance raised alarms among fans and analysts alike.
Charlotte jumped to an early 21-9 lead, but Oklahoma City fought back to tie the game at 33 by the end of the first quarter. The Hornets regained control in the second quarter, going into halftime with a commanding 67-50 lead.
Midway through the third quarter, LaMelo Ball executed an impressive circus shot, extending the Hornets’ lead to 74-55. By the end of the third period, Miller’s buzzer-beating three-pointer pushed the lead to 99-71, solidifying the Hornets’ commanding presence on the court.
The implications of this loss are significant for the Thunder as they look to regroup and reassess their strategy. Fans and analysts will closely watch how they respond in their upcoming games.
As the NBA season heats up, all eyes are on the Thunder to see if they can bounce back from this unexpected defeat, while the Hornets look to build on this crucial victory.
