Evanston Responds to Distress Call, Hazardous Material Found
UPDATE: An urgent hazardous materials response was initiated in Evanston this morning after a woman was found in distress at a local care facility. First responders were alerted to the situation at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Care, located at 1406 Chicago Ave., where they discovered the female resident conscious but exhibiting an altered mental state.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel transported the woman to a nearby hospital for treatment. Shortly after, at 10:12 a.m., they uncovered a suspicious substance in her room and in a fanny pack, prompting the call for a hazardous materials team. The Evanston Fire Department quickly isolated the substance, which was later determined to pose no threat to the public.
According to Jessie Mayo, a spokesperson for the City of Evanston, the unidentified material has been sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for further narcotics analysis. “The hazardous material has not yet been identified,” Mayo stated, emphasizing that authorities are treating the incident with caution but have described it as isolated.
During the response, authorities closed a section of Chicago Avenue between Dempster Street and Lake Street, ensuring the safety of the public and allowing first responders to operate effectively.
The Evanston Police Department took the lead in the response, supported by the Fire Department and regional hazardous materials teams. Mayo reiterated that the situation was handled with all necessary protocols in place to ensure community safety.
Greenwood Care is an intermediate care facility with 145 beds dedicated to the chronically mentally ill, highlighting the importance of swift action in safeguarding vulnerable populations.
This developing story underscores the critical nature of emergency response protocols and the importance of public safety in unexpected situations. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and further updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
