URGENT UPDATE: Fresno Police are launching a significant crackdown on drunk driving this weekend, with heightened patrols aimed at ensuring public safety. Starting at 6 P.M. on Saturday, eleven extra officers will be deployed throughout the city, focusing specifically on identifying intoxicated drivers.

Sergeant Todd Turney stressed the importance of taking this warning seriously: “The biggest thing is, don’t risk it.” Officers will be on the lookout for common traffic violations associated with impaired driving, such as weaving and speeding.

This operation will run until 4 A.M. on Sunday, coinciding with the holiday festivities when many residents will be returning from celebrations. “We do select these around the holiday weekends, whenever we see an increase of people coming back to the cities,” Sgt. Turney explained.

The urgency of this crackdown comes on the heels of a tragic incident earlier this week, where a husband and wife from Coalinga were killed by a suspected DUI driver. Authorities report that Shawn Borecha crashed into oncoming traffic while attempting to pass two cars, resulting in the deaths of Carlos and Maria Pimentel. Borecha now faces two counts of murder.

“When you impair your ability to operate the vehicle, bad things happen, such as a collision,” Sgt. Turney remarked, highlighting the dangers posed by drunk driving.

Recent data from the California Highway Patrol shows that Fresno County ended 2025 with over 5,500 DUI cases, including 423 felonies linked to severe injuries. Tragically, these preventable incidents resulted in the loss of 15 lives.

The financial consequences of a DUI conviction are steep, averaging over $13,000 in fines and penalties for first-time offenders, coupled with a suspended license. Sgt. Turney urges the community to plan ahead: “Whether it’s a ride share service, a family member, or a friend, plan ahead to ensure you get home safely.”

As this operation unfolds, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and prioritize safety on the roads. The police department is committed to preventing further tragedies and protecting the community from the dangers of drunk driving.
