UPDATE: A Cass County deputy narrowly averted a potential disaster by stopping a wrong-way driver on Interstate 29 during near-zero visibility conditions late Sunday night, December 28. The quick action by Deputy Ryan Hutton is being hailed as a critical intervention that prevented a major accident.

The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. as heavy winds, fog, and snow blanketed the Fargo area, prompting no-travel advisories statewide. With visibility drastically reduced, Deputy Hutton first spotted the vehicle heading northbound in the southbound lanes near Argusville, North Dakota.

“It was a terrifying situation,” Hutton recounted, describing how he could only see blurry headlights approaching him. “Me turning around and trying to alert him and slow him down…there’s not really a benefit to it, because I can’t see what I’m driving into.”

Hutton quickly alerted a nearby officer in Harwood, North Dakota, as the wrong-way driver continued on Interstate 29 for nearly four miles. The driver ultimately managed to pass several vehicles on the highway before officers could intervene.

Thanks to the quick thinking of law enforcement, the officers positioned themselves strategically to draw attention to the driver, successfully bringing the vehicle to a stop without any collisions. “There was a line of, I believe it was four to five cars behind the deputy that was able to stop the vehicle. With just the situation, it was a great outcome,” Hutton stated.

Miraculously, despite the dangerous circumstances, no other vehicles were involved in the incident. The driver, who has not been publicly named, was cited for multiple traffic violations. According to Deputy Hutton, the individual was simply lost and mistakenly entered the interstate while trying to navigate back to Fargo.

“This incident highlights the perils of driving in low visibility conditions,” Hutton emphasized. “If you can avoid it, do so.” His urgent message serves as a reminder for drivers to remain vigilant and cautious, especially during adverse weather situations.

As authorities continue to monitor road conditions, this event underscores the potential dangers of navigating highways during severe weather. Drivers are urged to exercise extra care and to heed all travel advisories to prevent similar incidents in the future.
