UPDATE: In a dramatic turn of events at the Santa Anita racetrack, trainer Bob Baffert has secured his record-breaking seventh victory in the prestigious Malibu Stakes today, December 26, 2023. This comes after an unprecedented series of last-minute scratches that left the race hanging in the balance.

Baffert, who had initially entered five horses in the $200,000 Grade I sprint, faced a significant setback just two days prior when he was forced to scratch his favorite, Cornucopian, due to a minor injury. Then, shockingly, just 15 minutes before the race, Cornucopian reared and fell in the paddock, leading to yet another last-minute withdrawal.

Despite these challenges, Baffert’s remaining contender, Goal Oriented, ridden by jockey Joel Rosario, surged from last place to clinch victory against Baffert’s own Midland Money, crossing the finish line in front of a cheering crowd of 41,962 fans. Goal Oriented clocked in at 1:20.99, marking the fastest time for the Malibu Stakes since 2016.

“There’s strength in numbers, you know?” Baffert declared in the winner’s circle, celebrating his third victory of the day following wins in the Grade II Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes and the Grade I La Brea Stakes.

The victory is particularly sweet for Baffert, breaking a four-race losing streak for Goal Oriented, who had previously struggled at longer distances, including a fourth-place finish in the Preakness. The win represents a significant turnaround for the horse, who is owned by SF Racing, Starlight Racing, and Madaket Stables, the same group behind Cornucopian.

“There’s no one to blame. It is what it is,” said SF Racing’s Tom Ryan, reflecting on the unexpected incident with Cornucopian. The horse, who was favored at 7-5 odds before his scratch, was examined by a veterinarian and deemed uninjured, but the safety protocols left Baffert and the team disappointed.

“Once they touch (the ground), that’s it, you’re out,” Baffert explained, expressing his frustrations about the safety measures. “It was crazy. It’s just so upsetting. The horse was doing so well.”

With this victory, Baffert surpasses fellow Hall of Famer Richard Mandella‘s previous record, having now won the Malibu Stakes seven times since 1988. His past winners include notable names like The Factor, McKinzie, and Charlatan.

This win today not only highlights Baffert’s enduring legacy in horse racing but also showcases the unpredictability of the sport. Fans are left eager for more as Baffert looks to continue his winning streak in upcoming races.

As the dust settles on this thrilling opening day at Santa Anita, eyes will be on Baffert and his stable as they prepare for future challenges in the racing season.
