Orlando Magic Fall to Hornets 120-105, Struggle Without Key Players
UPDATE: The Orlando Magic suffered a disappointing loss to the Charlotte Hornets, falling 120-105 at the Kia Center on December 22, 2023. This defeat marks a significant setback for the Magic, who were outplayed in energy and effort, especially without key players.
Before the game, coach Jamahl Mosley warned that Charlotte’s 10-20 record did not reflect their true potential. However, the Magic struggled to keep pace, trailing by as many as 24 points in the third quarter. Charlotte showcased their scoring depth, with seven players reaching double figures, including star guard LaMelo Ball, who scored 22 points and led the team to shoot 48.7% from beyond the arc.
In contrast, the Magic’s shooting woes were evident as they hit only 31.4% of their three-point attempts, finishing 11 for 35. The team simply could not mount a comeback, unable to secure crucial defensive stops.
The Magic, now standing at 17-14, will face the Denver Nuggets tomorrow at the Kia Center in a quick turnaround. This game is particularly important as they look to bounce back against reigning MVP Nikola Jokic, following a previous loss to Denver earlier this month.
The Magic played without key contributors Franz Wagner (high ankle sprain) and Jalen Suggs (hip bruise), forcing new rotations. Tyus Jones and Anthony Black joined Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane, and Wendell Carter Jr. in the starting lineup. Carter managed 16 points, but the team’s leading scorer, Black, finished with 24 points, showing flashes of brilliance but not enough to rally the team.
Black’s performance was a highlight; however, both Bane and Banchero struggled significantly, combining for an abysmal 0 for 8 from three-point range. Bane, who contributed 15 points, was plagued by foul trouble that limited his effectiveness, while Banchero ended with 13 points on 4 for 13 shooting.
On the bench, Tristan da Silva made a return after missing four games but only managed 8 points in the first half, with Charlotte outscoring Orlando’s bench 41-29. Reserve center Goga Bitadze missed his second consecutive game due to a knee strain.
In a more positive note, during halftime, the Magic brought joy to a local family by presenting them with gifts as part of the NBA Cares Season of Giving. The family received a new Kia Sorento EX, $5,000 for home furnishings, meals for a year, and other essential items, marking the 17th consecutive season for the team’s charitable initiative “The Big Give.”
As the Magic prepare for tomorrow’s matchup against the Nuggets, fans will be eager to see if the team can regroup and reclaim their momentum after this challenging defeat. Keep an eye on injury updates for Wagner and Suggs ahead of the game.
