Trump Gifts Golden Key to South Korea’s Lee Jae-myung in Diplomatic Gesture
UPDATE: In a significant diplomatic gesture, U.S. President Donald Trump has presented South Korean President Lee Jae-myung with a symbolic “Key to the White House.” This unique gift, part of a series of diplomatic exchanges, was delivered on December 16, 2023, signaling a deepening relationship between the two nations.
The golden key, one of only five ever made, represents a powerful symbol of cooperation and was sent following Trump’s earlier receipt of a replica of a Silla-era gold crown during a visit to South Korea in October. The key is engraved with the U.S. presidential seal and the words “Key to the White House,” emphasizing its exclusivity.
According to Kang Hoon-sik, chief of staff at the South Korean presidential office, the key was handed over during a meeting between Trump and South Korea’s ambassador to the U.S., Kang Kyung-wha. During this meeting, Trump expressed admiration for Lee, stating, “I really like him,” underscoring the strong bilateral relationship.
The gesture follows Lee’s presentation to Trump of a model of the gold crown excavated from Cheonmachong, a royal tomb from the ancient Silla Kingdom, during the APEC summit in Gyeongju. This exchange highlights the profound historical ties and mutual respect between the two leaders.
The golden key’s unveiling places President Lee among a select group of recipients, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and football star Cristiano Ronaldo. This honor signifies the key’s importance in international diplomacy and personal relations.
“This golden key, carrying special meaning, is hoped to become a symbol of the strong South Korea-U.S. relationship,” said Kang, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to solidifying their bilateral alliance.
As global tensions rise and alliances shift, this gesture by Trump is seen as a strategic move to reinforce ties with South Korea, a crucial ally in East Asia. The key’s delivery is not just a gift; it’s a statement of ongoing cooperation and shared goals between the two leaders.
Looking ahead, analysts are closely watching how this symbolic gesture will influence future diplomatic interactions and policies between the U.S. and South Korea. This developing story underscores the evolving nature of international relations and the importance of personal diplomacy in fostering global partnerships.
