UN Calls for Immediate Action on Bushra Khan’s Detention Conditions

The United Nations has raised serious concerns regarding the detention conditions of Bushra Bibi Khan, the wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Alice Jill Edwards, the UN Special Rapporteur on torture, urged Pakistani authorities to take immediate measures to improve her situation and adhere to international human rights standards.

Detention Conditions Under Scrutiny

According to Special Rapporteur Edwards, Bushra Khan is being held in a small cell that lacks adequate hygiene and ventilation. The conditions are exacerbated by frequent electricity cuts, which leave her in darkness for extended periods. Reports indicate that she has been provided with unclean water and inedible food, leading to significant weight loss and medical complications, including infections and fainting spells. Edwards highlighted that Bushra Khan has developed a stomach ulcer as a result of these conditions.

The UN expert also pointed out that Bushra Khan has been subjected to excessive periods of near-total isolation, severely restricting her access to family visits and legal counsel. Edwards emphasized that the continuation of such poor detention conditions could severely impact her physical and mental integrity.

International Obligations and Rights

The UN’s call to action is grounded in international law, which mandates that all forms of detention must respect the inherent dignity of individuals and prohibit torture or cruel treatment. The UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, also known as the Nelson Mandela Rules, stipulate that prisoners must be housed in conditions that meet health requirements and consider factors such as lighting, heating, and ventilation. Furthermore, these rules affirm the right of detainees to receive family visits and access legal aid.

Bushra Bibi Khan is currently imprisoned following a series of criminal convictions alongside her husband, Imran Khan. On December 22, 2023, a court sentenced both to a total of 17 years in prison for retailing and selling state gifts. Earlier in January, Bushra Khan received a seven-year sentence in the Al-Qadir corruption case. Both have consistently denied the charges, claiming they are politically motivated.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since 2023 following various convictions. Recently, the UN voiced concerns about his treatment in prison, warning that any mistreatment could constitute torture. The ongoing situation surrounding both Bushra and Imran Khan has attracted international attention, with calls for accountability and adherence to human rights standards gaining traction.

The UN’s intervention underscores the pressing need for the Pakistani government to address these allegations and ensure humane treatment for all detainees, reinforcing the importance of upholding international human rights laws.
