Bruins Collapse in 6-2 Loss to Canadiens, Extend Losing Streak
UPDATE: The Boston Bruins experienced a devastating 6-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens at TD Garden on December 26, 2023, marking their fourth consecutive defeat as they head into the NHL’s Christmas break. Fans expressed their frustration, directing boos toward referees Furman South and Brandon Blandina during the intense matchup.
The Bruins, who led 2-1 after the first period, were unable to maintain momentum, falling victim to a barrage of four goals in the third period, including two power-play strikes. This latest defeat drops their record to 20-17-1, intensifying pressure as the team struggles to find its footing.
The Canadiens, now at 20-12-5, surged in the final period, with Ivan Demidov tying the game before the Canadiens exploded with goals from Zachary Bolduc, Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Juraj Slafkovsky. Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman managed 23 saves, but the team’s frequent penalties—six minors and a double minor—undermined their efforts, leaving them scrambling on the ice.
Tempers flared early in the game, with Tanner Jeannot and Josh Anderson engaging in a thrilling fight just three seconds into the match, igniting the crowd. However, the Bruins’ penalty issues soon took center stage, forcing them into a defensive stance that hindered their offensive capabilities.
The Canadiens opened the scoring with Sammy Blais netting his first goal for the team after being claimed off waivers. The Bruins responded when Marat Khusnutdinov capitalized on a slick play to tie the game, followed by Alex Steeves giving Boston a brief lead with a power-play goal.
Despite their efforts, the Bruins could not shake off the Canadiens’ relentless pressure. A potential go-ahead goal by Elias Lindholm was controversially disallowed for goalie interference, further complicating the Bruins’ situation.
As the NHL approaches the Christmas break, all eyes will be on the Bruins as they seek to break this troubling streak. They must regroup quickly to regain confidence and find their footing in the competitive Eastern Conference.
Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how the team responds in their upcoming games. The Bruins need a swift turnaround to avoid falling further behind in the playoff race.
