Lane Striping on I-476 Sunday: Expect Delays Amid $63.7M Overhaul
Motorists traveling on Interstate 476 in Pennsylvania should prepare for significant delays on Sunday, March 17, 2024, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) initiates temporary lane striping related to a major reconstruction project valued at $63.7 million. This initiative spans Montgomery and Delaware counties and is expected to cause backups in both directions throughout the day.
From 08:00 AM to 04:00 PM, mobile lane closures will be implemented between the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and Route 3 (West Chester Pike) interchanges. PennDOT has advised that these closures will likely slow traffic considerably, and drivers should anticipate lengthy delays.
Project Overview and Goals
The lane striping is part of a broader effort to resurface and modernize nearly 17 miles of the Blue Route, which includes on- and off-ramps as well as several bridges from West Conshohocken Borough to I-95 in Ridley Township. The project is designed to enhance the interstate’s service life while improving ride quality and safety, particularly in areas where infrastructure has deteriorated.
Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor, H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, will undertake various tasks. These include milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders, repairing 49 structures, upgrading 21 stormwater management basins, addressing rock slope stabilization issues, and replacing drainage inlets at select locations. Additionally, the project will introduce new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderails.
PennDOT has confirmed that the entire project is financed with federal funds, ensuring no local taxpayer dollars are used. As the work continues, all scheduled activities are subject to weather conditions.
Advice for Motorists
As the reconstruction work progresses, motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, stay vigilant in work zones, and consider alternate routes to avoid delays.
