Sheriff Country Surges in Viewership After S.W.A.T. Cancellation
The new CBS series, Sheriff Country, has experienced significant viewership growth since it replaced S.W.A.T. in the network’s Friday night lineup. Following the action drama’s series finale in May 2023, Sheriff Country has captivated audiences, achieving a remarkable average of approximately 6.24 million viewers per episode since its premiere in October.
The cancellation of S.W.A.T., which notably survived two previous cancellations, marked the end of an era for the procedural genre on CBS. Originally canceled after its sixth season, the show returned for a seventh season, ultimately concluding after its eighth season. Despite its departure, S.W.A.T. will continue through a spinoff featuring Shemar Moore reprising his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr.
In its new timeslot at 8 PM ET on Fridays, Sheriff Country has shown impressive performance, boasting a consistent viewership increase over seven consecutive weeks. According to Nielsen’s live and same-day data, the show has outperformed its predecessor by 11% in the same timeslot when compared to S.W.A.T. Season 8.
Strong Start and Spinoff Plans
The initial episodes of Sheriff Country have accumulated a total of 11.3 million viewers within a 35-day window, making it the second highest-rated new show in that timeframe, following the Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue. Both shows have already secured a second season renewal.
When taking into account multi-platform viewing, including streaming services, Sheriff Country has achieved a 63% increase over the viewership numbers of S.W.A.T. This surge indicates a strong connection with audiences, further solidifying CBS’s confidence in the series.
The show stars Morena Baccarin as Mickey Fox, the titular sheriff navigating the complexities of small-town life in Edgewater. Mickey’s straightforward approach to her job often contrasts with the community’s perceptions, as she grapples with personal challenges, including a complicated relationship with her ex-con father and a mystery involving her daughter. The ensemble cast also features Christopher Gorham, Michele Weaver, Matt Lauria, and W. Earl Brown.
As Sheriff Country prepares to take a hiatus after its December 19 episode, viewers are left eager to explore the new show. Meanwhile, the momentum for the S.W.A.T. franchise continues with the development of a new spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles. This series will feature Hondo alongside a younger cast, including returning characters played by Jay Harrington and Patrick St. Esprit.
While details regarding the release date and platform for S.W.A.T. Exiles remain under wraps, the prospect of a new chapter in the franchise has already generated excitement among fans. As CBS enjoys success with Sheriff Country, the network appears poised to capitalize on its growing popularity in the procedural drama landscape.
