Pelicans Soar Past Blazers 143-120 with Poole’s Impact
The New Orleans Pelicans celebrated a significant turnaround on March 14, 2024, defeating the Portland Trail Blazers 143-120. This victory marked the end of a challenging seven-game losing streak and showcased a revitalized offense, thanks in large part to the return of Jordan Poole from a left quadriceps injury. Poole’s presence transformed the team’s dynamics, allowing them to dominate the game and set a franchise record with 86 points in the paint.
Poole’s return injected energy into the Pelicans, who had struggled offensively in recent weeks. He scored 22 points in his first game back, demonstrating a renewed aggression that had been lacking. His ability to penetrate the defense helped open up scoring opportunities for his teammates, enabling New Orleans to find their rhythm. This win was particularly significant for head coach James Borrego, who secured only his second victory since taking over in mid-November after the departure of Willie Green.
Team Depth Shines in Historic Performance
While Poole garnered attention, the Pelicans’ depth played a critical role in the win. Six players scored at least 15 points, highlighting the team’s collective effort. Bryce McGowens emerged as a standout, tying his career high with 23 points and shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc. His timely three-pointers thwarted any attempts by the Blazers to close the gap.
The performance of rookies Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen also contributed to the Pelicans’ success. Fears scored 19 points with impressive poise, while Queen added 17 points and showcased strong interior play. Their contributions not only bolstered the team’s scoring but also provided a glimpse of the Pelicans’ potential for future seasons.
Emotions Run High Despite the Lopsided Score
Despite the comfortable lead, the game was not without its drama. Herb Jones, known for his disciplined demeanor, surprised fans by receiving two technical fouls and being ejected from the game. This marked the first ejection of his career and served as an unexpected display of passion. While it was out of character for Jones, it underscored the team’s determination to fight back against adversity, even with a commanding lead.
On the opposing side, the Trail Blazers struggled to find their footing. Missing key players due to injury, they managed only ten available players for the game. Shaedon Sharpe led the Blazers with 21 points, while Sidy Cissoko added 20 points. Despite their efforts, the team could not overcome the defensive lapses that allowed the Pelicans to score nearly 90 points in the paint.
For the Pelicans, this victory is a step in the right direction, but challenges remain as they navigate the standings. The promising offensive performance against the Blazers provides a much-needed morale boost as the team looks to build on this success in the upcoming games. The excitement of returning to winning form has invigorated the franchise and its supporters, signaling a potential shift in their season’s trajectory.
