Penn State Berks Celebrates Innovation at Berks Innovation Awards

Penn State Berks hosted its inaugural Berks Innovation Awards Ceremony, celebrating student innovators and local entrepreneurs. The event, which took place in November 2023, combined two significant competitions: the Innovation and Business Idea Challenge and the IMAGINE Your Business Grant Awards. This initiative recognized student teams for their creative solutions to pressing local and global challenges, as well as community entrepreneurs who received grant funding for their innovative ventures.

The ceremony was co-sponsored by the college’s Flemming Creativity, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (CEED) Center and Berks LaunchBox, highlighting the institution’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship. According to Pamela Menet, Berks County Director of Community and Economic Development, “The county is pleased to have the Penn State Berks Flemming Creativity, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Center and Berks LaunchBox as key partners to implement our IMAGINE Berks Strategic Plan.”

Innovation and Business Idea Challenge Winners

The Innovation and Business Idea Challenge focused on addressing issues of hunger and food insecurity, aligning with an initiative aimed at enhancing the efficiency of local food banks. This year’s winners exemplified innovative thinking in their approaches to these challenges.

Among the standout projects was the EggShare Network, developed by Hannah Pham, a marketing major. This initiative creates a community-based digital platform that connects local farmers and backyard producers with food banks and households in need of surplus eggs.

Another notable entry was Finish Me, created by Minnich Tang Chuy, a finance major. This app helps users access upcycled cafeteria surplus, enabling students to reserve or purchase affordable meals.

Lastly, a team of engineering students, including Gage Fulmer and Sara Christine, developed an interactive exhibit called FoodWaste. This project highlights the financial losses associated with food waste through a scale-based display in the college’s dining hall, accompanied by infographics on food waste and insecurity on campuses.

The goal of the Innovation and Business Idea Challenge is to provide seed funding for promising student ideas, according to Sadan Kulturel-Konak, Professor of Management Information Systems and Director of the Flemming CEED Center. “Our primary objective with this competition is to allow students to utilize their Penn State Berks education to become entrepreneurs and start businesses that can create jobs in our local community,” Kulturel-Konak stated.

IMAGINE Your Business Grant Recipients

The IMAGINE Your Business Grants were awarded to early-stage entrepreneurs who demonstrated creativity and a commitment to their respective fields. This year’s recipients spanned various industries, from technology to mental health services.

Among the grant recipients was Wildcraft Landscapes LLC, founded by Nathan Tietbohl. This company focuses on designing and maintaining ecologically sustainable landscapes using native plants and rain gardens.

Another recipient, Alison Woo Designs, led by Alison Woo, creates unique jewelry using semi-precious stones and fine metals, emphasizing sustainability and customization.

Additionally, LumiVillage, founded by Amna and Syed Fahad Hussein, developed an app that connects community members to share everyday skills through lessons and classes, ensuring safety through verified profiles and background checks.

The innovative offerings continued with On Brand Moments LLC, established by Danielle Hettler, which specializes in laser engraving for gifts and branding. Mental health support was also represented through Emotional Compass, founded by Licensed Professional Counselor Hilary Aponte-Chimelis, who provides trauma-informed therapy services.

Lastly, Wolfe Counseling and Wellness LLC, led by Licensed Professional Counselor Jenna Wolfe, focuses on evidence-based mental health treatment in a supportive environment.

“We’re proud to partner with Berks County to empower early-stage entrepreneurs,” said Erica Kunkel, Director of Berks LaunchBox. “This support ensures that promising ideas have the funding they need to grow, succeed, and make a meaningful impact right here in our region.”

The Berks Innovation Awards Ceremony not only highlighted the creativity and innovation of Penn State Berks students but also reinforced the importance of community support for local entrepreneurs, fostering an environment where new ideas can flourish.
