Tucson Faces Water Crisis Amid Dwindling Colorado River Supply
URGENT UPDATE: Tucson is grappling with an imminent water crisis as its reliance on the dwindling Colorado River reaches critical levels. The Central Arizona Project (CAP) is currently experiencing a Tier 1 shortage, with Lake Mead, the main water source, projected to hit record lows by 2027, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior.
This situation is not just a statistic; it threatens the very fabric of Tucson’s growth and sustainability. As CAP reduces water allocations, Tucson’s ability to store vital groundwater reserves diminishes, putting the city’s future at risk. Groundwater is Tucson’s lifeline, serving as a renewable storage system essential for maintaining a reliable water supply amid increasing uncertainties.
Fortunately, solutions exist to bolster Tucson’s water resilience. A significant opportunity lies in enhancing stormwater runoff collection. With much of Tucson’s infrastructure dominated by impermeable surfaces like concrete, the city is losing precious rainwater that could be redirected into groundwater reserves.
In a groundbreaking study from 2018, researchers from Arizona State University and the University of Arizona revealed that Tucson receives enough rainfall annually to meet its water consumption needs—and more. Yet, less than 2% of this rainwater is currently harvested. The potential for stormwater retention systems is enormous, providing a dual benefit: reducing street flooding while replenishing the aquifer.
To capitalize on this potential, Tucson must adopt a policy mandating stormwater retention infrastructure in all new developments. This includes implementing permeable surfaces and onsite basins that could significantly increase groundwater recharge rates. By diversifying its water supply, Tucson could lessen its dependence on the uncertain CAP allocations, enhancing climate resilience and facilitating sustainable growth.
While some may argue that initial construction costs could deter developers, this policy ultimately represents a long-term investment in Tucson’s future. Without proactive measures, the city risks stagnation, as ongoing shortages threaten to slow growth and escalate water scarcity.
The call to action is clear: Tucson must act decisively to strengthen its groundwater recharge strategies. The implications of failing to do so are dire, not just for the city’s economy but for the quality of life of its residents. The community’s future hinges on embracing innovative solutions to harness and store water, ensuring that Tucson thrives in the face of a looming water crisis.
Residents and leaders alike are urged to engage in this critical discussion and advocate for sustainable policies that protect and enhance Tucson’s water resources. The time to act is NOW.
