Microsoft Confirms PS5 Launch of Flight Simulator 2024 on Dec 8
UPDATE: In a stunning shift, Microsoft has confirmed that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will officially launch on PS5 on December 8, 2023. This marks a historic first for the franchise, which has never before been available on a PlayStation console.
The game is already accessible via early access, reflecting a significant change in Microsoft’s strategy to bring its previously exclusive titles to new platforms. During a recent conversation with Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, he revealed that the idea of a PS5 version was initially pitched but declined by Xbox leadership.
In a twist of fate, Sony’s interest in the franchise reignited discussions, leading to a breakthrough agreement. Neumann stated, “Somebody from Sony who grew up with flight simulation thought it would be a great addition to the Sony portfolio.” This pivotal interaction set the stage for a wave of Xbox titles making their way to PlayStation.
Neumann emphasized the importance of making the game accessible to a broader audience, noting the massive growth in user engagement on Xbox since the game’s debut there. “We found millions and millions of new fans on Xbox that had never seen the flight sim because they’re just not PC gamers,” he explained.
The porting process was complex and involved collaboration with Climax Studios, which Neumann has partnered with in the past. They played a crucial role in adapting the game for PS5, ensuring compatibility and performance optimization, particularly for the unique DualSense controller.
Neumann also addressed the technical specifications for the PS5 Pro, revealing that the game will support a resolution of 3200×1800, compared to the standard PS5’s 2560×1440 upscaled resolution. While aiming for high performance, he acknowledged challenges in maintaining frame rates, stating, “The nature of the game doesn’t really allow it to be a constant 60 frames per second.”
As the launch date approaches, excitement builds in the gaming community, with many eager to explore the new features tailored for PlayStation users. The PS5 version is not just a simple port; it includes enhancements that harness the console’s capabilities, promising gamers an immersive experience.
Looking ahead, Neumann hinted at potential expansion to other platforms, saying, “We’re totally open… there will also be new platforms, no doubt.” This could pave the way for Microsoft Flight Simulator to reach an even wider audience.
With the launch just days away, players are gearing up for a groundbreaking experience that reshapes the flight simulation landscape on consoles. Prepare for takeoff on December 8 as Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 lands on PS5, a move that is sure to redefine gaming boundaries and engage a new generation of flight enthusiasts.
