Whitman County Historical and Genealogical Societies Open New Location

In a significant development for local history enthusiasts, the Whitman County Genealogical Society and the Whitman County Historical Society have relocated to a new shared space at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman. The public is invited to explore the new library and archive resources during an open house on October 1, 2023, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Both organizations are dedicated to preserving the region’s history through collecting, researching, and engaging with the community. Although they operate as separate entities, they frequently collaborate and share resources to enhance their efforts.

Exploring Local Heritage

Monica Peters, correspondence secretary of the genealogical society, highlighted the organization’s role in bridging gaps in family histories. She noted that they provide valuable information that is often not available online, relying on written records and personal accounts to assist individuals in their genealogical pursuits.

Alex Otero, archivist at the historical society, explained that their focus encompasses a broader perspective on the region’s heritage. They offer tangible collections that showcase the “where” and “what” of Whitman County’s past, preserving artifacts and mementos critical to understanding local history.

The societies are accessible to the public on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon, or by appointment. Currently, the historical society offers free research assistance, while the genealogical society charges $20 per hour for genealogical research support.

Relocation and New Beginnings

Both organizations faced challenges when the Gladish Community and Cultural Center closed its doors in September 2023, leaving them with limited time to relocate. Peters and Otero expressed that the closure was unexpected, allowing only about two weeks to pack their archives and library and find a new home.

The move marks a new chapter for these societies, which had established roots at the Gladish for over three decades. The historical society, founded in 1972, relocated its archive library to the Gladish in 1987 as its collection began to grow. The genealogical society, formed in 1984, initially operated without a physical location before moving into the Gladish in 1992 as their resources expanded.

Otero emphasized the importance of organizations like the historical society, noting that they serve as a repository for artifacts and publications that reflect the region’s history. He pointed out that outside their facilities, there are few places where individuals can access century-old publications such as the Pullman Herald, view historical maps, and examine old photographs.

Peters added that there is a strong interest in genealogical research, as many seek to connect with their ancestry and community. The work of the genealogical society helps residents discover more than just names, fostering a sense of belonging to their historical roots.
