Mexican composer María Leonora is set to captivate audiences with her innovative concert series, “Through All the Fire,” scheduled for 2025. Each performance draws inspiration from themes of fire and renewal, blending music with the ritualistic elements of pre-Hispanic culture. This unique approach transforms her concerts into immersive experiences that encourage self-exploration and emotional release.

In preparation for her concerts, Leonora adopts a powerful persona, likening her pre-show rituals to gearing up for battle. “I look into the mirror and I sort of go to war,” she explained before a recent performance in Mexico City. Her layered attire, tribal makeup, and protective amulet embody her commitment to the transformative journey she offers her audience. “I brace myself to walk through the fire and whatever happens happens.”

Music as a Means of Renewal

“Through All the Fire” is structured as a series of interconnected chapters, each exploring the duality of destruction and rebirth associated with fire. Leonora believes that music, much like flames, has the capacity to renew and cleanse. “A fire can burn and destroy,” she stated. “But if you make it through, you can be reborn.”

The concept draws heavily from the traditional Mesoamerican steam bath known as a temazcal, which has been integral to social and spiritual practices in the region. According to archaeologist Agustín Ortiz, temazcales were considered “the Earth’s interior” and served as a passage between the living and the underworld. These structures, often located near ceremonial sites, created an environment for spiritual cleansing and renewal. “You may suffer as you enter a temazcal, but you put up with it,” Leonora remarked, emphasizing the cathartic process involved in both the ritual and her performances.

A Journey Through Emotion

Leonora’s personal journey with music began at age 16 when she discovered its healing power during a challenging adolescence. Embracing punk rock and learning the drums led her to the stage, where she found an outlet for transformation. “I was able to transform so many things just by playing and standing in front of an audience,” she said. “I can honestly say it saved my life.”

In her concert series, she performs a diverse repertoire aimed at guiding audiences from darkness toward renewal. “Music is a powerful tool that can connect you to Earth, to life, to the universe and to other people,” she explained. Each performance is designed to be an immersive experience, incorporating sound, lighting, and visuals that envelop the audience.

Producer Diego Cristian Saldaña elaborated on this goal, stating, “We want the audience to feel enveloped in the experience of each song, in the emotions and specific sensations the music triggers.” Audience members have described their experiences as deeply gratifying, often leaving the performance feeling energized and uplifted.

Leonora’s concerts begin with an invitation to cross the “salt circle,” symbolizing a departure from the outside world. The performance unfolds with songs that span themes of love and heartbreak, reflecting personal struggles and emotional depths. As the show progresses, Leonora strips away her layers, both literally and metaphorically, culminating in a moment of collective catharsis where attendees are encouraged to express themselves freely.

“Our last song is like a first ray of light,” she said, indicating the transformative power of the experience. “You can look back into your life and move forward toward luminosity.”

In a world increasingly searching for meaning, María Leonora’s “Through All the Fire” offers a unique combination of music, ritual, and personal exploration, inviting audiences to embark on their own journeys of renewal.
