House Passes Key Bills Amid Urgent Congressional Votes This Week
URGENT UPDATE: The House of Representatives has just passed a series of significant bills this week, marking pivotal moments in U.S. legislation. Among the most critical is the SBA Fraud Enforcement Extension Act (H.R. 4495), extending the statute of limitations for fraud related to pandemic programs. This move comes as lawmakers respond swiftly to concerns regarding financial misconduct during the pandemic.
The House also unanimously approved the Social Security Child Protection Act (H.R. 5348), proposed by Rep. Lloyd Smucker, requiring the Social Security Administration to issue new numbers for children under 14 if their cards are lost or stolen. Smucker emphasized that this change is “a simple fix to protect our children,” reflecting a growing urgency to safeguard vulnerable populations. The vote on December 1 saw 386 yeas and only 1 present.
In another significant legislative move, the House passed the No New Burma Funds Act (H.R. 4423), spearheaded by Rep. Nikema Williams. This bill mandates the U.S. representative at the World Bank to advocate against financial aid to Burma, a response to the ongoing military coup since 2021. Williams stated, “This legislation gives our country yet another tool to put financial pressure on the Burmese government.” The December 1 vote was unanimous at 385 yeas.
The focus on small businesses intensified with the passage of the Small Business Regulatory Reduction Act (H.R. 2965). Sponsored by Rep. Beth Van Duyne, this bill seeks to ensure that the SBA’s regulatory budget does not exceed zero, aiming to empower small businesses by reducing bureaucratic hurdles. However, opponents like Rep. Nydia Velazquez warned that it could limit necessary SBA regulations. The vote on December 3 resulted in 223 yeas to 190 nays.
Additionally, the Destroying Unnecessary, Misaligned, and Prohibitive Red Tape Act (H.R. 4305) passed, requiring the SBA to create a hotline for small businesses to report regulatory burdens. This legislation, pushed by Rep. Tony Wied, passed with 269 yeas against 146 nays on December 3.
In education, the House adopted the Combating the Lies of Authoritarians in School Systems Act (H.R. 1005), which conditions federal funding on schools not accepting funds from China. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. David P. Joyce, commented on the need to protect children from foreign influence. The vote on December 3 showed 242 yeas to 176 nays.
The Senate also confirmed multiple judicial nominees this week, including David Bragdon and Lindsey Ann Freeman for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina, amidst fierce debates on their qualifications. The votes took place on December 2 and December 3, with both nominations receiving narrow margins.
In a contentious move, the Senate passed a bill to nullify a Bureau of Land Management rule restricting oil and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, led by Rep. Nicholas J. Begich. This bill, which passed on December 4 with 49 yeas to 45 nays, has sparked criticism from environmental advocates who view the refuge as a critical national treasure.
As Congress continues to navigate these crucial issues, the impact on American lives, from child protection to small business support, is profound. Readers should stay tuned for ongoing developments as these bills move through the legislative process and potential implications unfold.
